About Steven Merchant III

Chief Steven Merchant III is a third generation GVFD chief and life member who joined the department in 2004. He serves in department leadership, interior firefighting, and EMS, and values practical training and continued learning. Beyond emergency response, he has helped with the department's barbecues, Santa Run, life member dinners, and 75th anniversary activities. He is active in the Connecticut Fire Chiefs Association and the New London County Fire Chiefs Association. Chief Merchant says public service and family motivated him to join. He encourages prospective volunteers to learn all they can, put safety first, and make room for teamwork and family.
